Join us for Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain with Lisa Blackshear, at the Murphy Oakley Rec Center on Thursday, February 27th, from 10 am – 12:30 pm. Doors open at 9:30 am. Donations will be collected at the door with 85% going to our instructing artist and the remainder to AULP to support our programs. (See location details at the bottom of this announcement.)
Unlock the power of the right side of your brain and unleash your creativity in all walks of life! Drawing is a skill that can be taught. Exercises from the groundbreaking book by Betty Edwards, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain explore the 5 component parts of drawing: Edges, Spaces, Relationships, Values, and the Gestalt. Suitable for absolute beginners who feel they can't draw at all, as well as experienced artists who would like improve their realism.
- A stack of Inexpensive copy paper
- Ordinary #2 pencil with eraser
- Pencil Sharpener
- Eraser: Kneaded, Pink Pearl, or Staedtler Mars white plastic
- Drawing board (big enough to tape your paper to made of something rigid: Masonite, Foamboard, thick cardboard or whatever)
- Masking tape or artist tape
- Thin point Sharpie or permanent marker
- Papermate Flair or other thin point water soluble marker
- Graphite stick
- Tissues or paper towel
- Picture Plane: 8"x10" piece of glass or plastic about 1/16" thick
- 2 Viewfinders: 8"x10" black construction paper or thin cardboard
One with an opening in the middle that's 4.25"x5.25"
The other with an opening in the middle that's 6"x7.75"
(Although 12 people have RSVP'd and the 12 sets of Picture Planes and Viewfinders have been allocated, there will be room for everyone)
Lisa Blackshear is an artist living in the Asheville Area. After 20 years illustrating in New York, she moved to Asheville for its natural beauty and vibrant art scene. She started the Asheville Urban Landscape Project in 2013 and exhibits her impressionist landscape oil paintings at Woolworth Walk.
To find us, locate the address on 749 Fairview Rd, which houses the fire station, library and community center. The parking lot behind the library can be accessed from Liberty St. The basement of the building opens from the parking lot into the multipurpose room where we meet. It has a large sink in the kitchen, bathrooms and heat! We hope to see you there!
